Every year, the Fishers High School baseball team holds its Strike Out Kancer game. The event will take place at 6 p.m. April 28 during the varsity baseball game. The event raises money for local cancer-related causes.

“Every year we pick a game to raise money for something cancer-related. In the past, we always used to donate to the American Cancer Society. Then last year we started picking a foundation around the area or someone close to Fishers High School to support,” FHS baseball coach Matthew Cherry said. “This year we’re going to be raising money for Halle Guilliam, whose older sister is a softball player here at FHS. Halle’s fighting cancer now.”

Guilliam was diagnosed with medulloblastoma in 2016. She is being treated at Riley Hospital for Children and Northwestern University. She’s undergone extensive surgery and chemotherapy.

“The funds raised from this event will go directly to Halle’s family to help offset the costs surrounding childhood cancer treatment, and everything that goes with it. Halle has requested we take a portion of the funds raised and donate it to the Make-A-Wish Foundation,” event co-coordinator Amy Roudebush said.

Guests can sponsor an inning of the game in memory or honor of a loved one. There will be a silent auction where guests can bid on a variety of items. Cancer survivors are invited onto the field during the National Anthem. A special guest always throws the first pitch.

“We’re hoping to have Halle come out and throw out the first pitch,” Cherry said.

Guilliam hasn’t let her diagnosis and treatment change her outlook.

“Halle always has a smile on her face, even on the toughest days she will crack a smile. Her attitude and outlook on school, treatment and everything is amazing. She is so positive and is always encouraging to others,” Halle’s mom Kara stated in an email to Current.
